Best tips for dry and sensitive skin

Bästa tipsen mot torr och känslig hud

Many of us can probably relate to experiencing problems with dry and sensitive skin. But why do we suffer from it, and how can we counteract it?

Why do we get dry and sensitive skin?

Here, we feel it's appropriate to start by explaining what the skin's microbiome (skin flora) is. A microbiome refers to all microorganisms, such as beneficial bacteria, viruses, and fungi, that live on and contribute to healthy skin by forming a protective barrier. Every person has a unique composition of microorganisms, and it also differs across various parts of the body and different areas of the face. The skin has a pH value of around 5 and an acid mantle that independently produces fatty acids, waxes, and salts, which also contribute to healthy skin and a protective barrier. However, when the skin's microbiome, acid mantle, and pH value are imbalanced, it can lead to dry and sensitive skin.

How can the skin become imbalanced?

Things that can disrupt the skin's balance and protective barrier include excessive cleansing, harsh products, and hot water. This dries out the skin and results in us washing away the skin's own built-in functions. When the protection disappears, it takes several hours to rebuild it, and during that time, the skin is more susceptible to external substances. The microbiome, acid mantle, and pH value rebuild overnight, but every time we wash the skin, the balance is disturbed. Our pH value can also be disrupted if we use products that are far from the skin's own pH value.

Five tips on how to cleanse your skin without disturbing its balance

So, how can you avoid putting your skin out of balance? Here are our five best tips.

1. Cleanse your face only once a day – in the evening before you go to bed.

2. Use a gentle cleanser, preferably entirely cream- or oil-based with a pH value of around 5.

3. Use only lukewarm water or a little toner in the morning. Your skin is typically not dirty after the night, so often only a light refresh is needed, along with providing the skin with moisture, oils, and protection.

4. Don't shower too hot or too often.

5. If you shower every day, it's better to do it in the evening than in the morning. Because if you shower in the evening, the skin's barrier has time to rebuild overnight.
